Famous Quotes
“Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, water bugs, tadpoles, frogs, mud
turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb. Brooks to wade,
water lilies, woodchucks, bats, bees, butterflies, various animals to pet, hayfields, pinecones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets. And any child who has been
deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of education.”
— Luther Burbank (American horticulturalist and botanist, 1849 – 1926)
“Imagination is more important than knowledge.” — Albert Einstein
My Childhood Connection To Play
When I was a young child my parents encouraged me to play. As a child I was expected to go outside and play. The adults around me would have found it strange for me or any child to sit inside and watch TV all day. My parents did not buy toys often, so growing up my friends and I created toys. We made bow and arrows, pop guns and jump boards just to name a few.
Play today in my opinion is much different than when I grew up in the late sixties and seventies. Today, my children spend less time outside and more time watching TV and playing with their electronic toys. Some of the toys are educational but I know they should spend more time doing creative activities.
Amy, I believe most children are spending more time inside watching TV and playing electronics. My husband and I kept my nephews this summer and we had to literally make them go outside and play!
ReplyDeleteAmy,
ReplyDeleteI really like your quotes. I used to play outside just like you mention, and toys were not bought for me often either, so we have to find creative ways to play.
